Under the City 2018.12

INTRODUCTION

Under the City is an augmented reality applications that connects real world and virtual world. Imaging there is a crazy minion world underground! In this world, minions are crazy playing around with their world. After we went to the Time Square in New York City and looked around the buildings to see what we can do with them, we came up a great idea of destroy the floor, buildings and screens by making holes on them. Once the hole came up user will see an other totally different world in the other side of the hole. We want to include the gesture detection in the ARKit, and let users to use gesture to create the hole that connects to another world. The hole will be a portal of the reality and fantasy world, and we will make a series of fantasy world for people to play with.

CONCEPT AND BACKGROUND

Creating a portal is not an unprecedented technique in augmented reality world, but what if things come out from virtual world to real world and have interaction between virtual and physical. Minion is a popular series of animation created by Universal. As they are featured with childlike behavior, we decide to take advantages of it and choose minions as our main character that comes out from the ground to interact with real world. Besides, for the portal part, there are many different types of portal such as door, frame, or mirror. However, because we desire to make portal attached to the ground and have interaction with user, for instance, cracking while user clicks on it, we choose hole as our portal to connect two worlds.

CHARACTER - MINIONS

The Minions are small, yellow henchmen, shaped like pill capsules. They are depicted as being roughly one-third to one-half the height of humans. They have one or two eyes, and their irises are almost always brown. They have no discernable noses but seem capable of smelling, as they are shown smelling fruit and are affected by the Fart Gun. They are also shown without ears but can hear and respond to sounds. Most minions appear either bald or with a few wispy strands of black hair on their heads. Since they are coming to America in the late 1960s, their clothing consists of blue overalls emblazoned with Gru's logo, black rubber gloves, shoes, and goggles. They mostly speak incomprehensible gibberish, which is partly derived from other languages, including Bahasa Indonesia, French, English, Italian, Spanish, and Hindi. Although seemingly nonsensical, the English-sounding dialogue is dubbed differently for every country, in order to make the sounds somewhat recognizable. They have common English-language names, such as Kevin, Stuart and Bob (the lead trio in Minions) and Mel (the leader of the Minions in Despicable Me 3).  In the 2010 short film "Banana", the Minions are revealed to have an almost uncontrollable craving for fruit, especially bananas.

DESIGN AND PROTOTYPE

In this application, we designed 3 elements, hole as a portal, minion world, and minions flying out to physical world, to depict the experience that things come from virtual world to real world. The goal is to make people create a hole to see what if there is a world under the city that we walk through every day, having more amazing experience at Time Square. This Augmented Reality application was designed to make the audience feel interesting and unforgettable from these two worlds between virtual and physical.

TECHNIQUES

Starting from building a hole in Unity, making minion model in Maya and rigging animation in Mixamo, we make a minion world which is under the hole mainly in Unity System. By using ARkit built by iOS, Apple, which has plane detection including both vertical and horizontal, allowing us to place the hole on the ground. In addition, we combine plane detection with gesture detection that user can click to create a hole wherever they desire by meeting both conditions - plane is detected and there is a click event on screen.
